The 12 silent signs your elderly parent is hiding from you.

Most adult children realise their parent isn't okay months after the parent already knew. "I'm fine" is the most overused phrase in elderly care.

We see this every day in our data. The signs are usually there for 3 to 6 months before anyone outside the home notices.

The 12 signs

1
The stories thin out
Conversations used to include the day's details. Tea with Margaret. The postman. The cat. Now they're shorter. Could be memory drift, could be social withdrawal, often both.
2
Same outfit, day after day
They've stopped dressing for the day. They're dressing to get through it.
3
The fridge is emptier and lighter
They're eating less but also moving less to shop. Quick check: ask what they had for breakfast. A pause before the answer is a flag.

4
They've stopped doing the small things they always did
The crossword. Watering the plants. Posting the birthday card on time. Each one is a tiny giving-up.
5
They mention "feeling a bit dizzy" once
Then never again. One mention is usually five unmentioned episodes.
6
The phone calls get shorter
By half, over a few weeks. They're not bored. They're tired.
7
Talk of moving the bed downstairs
Often dressed up as "easier with the cat". Usually about the stairs.
8
The "I'll just sit down" mid-task
They never used to need to. Could be a UTI. Could be heart. Often not just "getting old".
9
They don't mention friends by name anymore
Either friends have died, or they've stopped seeing them. Both are losses they won't grieve out loud.
10
A small bruise they explain too quickly
The bruises we see in our partner data are usually patterned to one side. That's balance loss, and falls they don't want to mention.
11
They confuse a day or two
"I thought it was Tuesday." Once is nothing. Three times in a month is something.
12
They describe a TV show in detail and nothing else
TV becomes the day when the rest of it is too hard.

What to do if three or more apply

Today
Call, don't text. Listen for half-laughs and trailed-off sentences. Ask one open question and let the silence sit.
This week
Drop in unannounced if you can. The state of the kitchen, the post pile, and the laundry will tell you more than your parent will.
